Why are some wind turbines stopped in windy weather?

Answer: The reason why some wind turbines are standing still in windy weather is that the majority of electricity production in the electricity systems for long periods mostly comes from wind turbines. In these periods, in addition to green electricity production, wind turbines also help to ensure that electricity consumption and production are always equal and in balance.

When a wind turbine is stopped in windy weather, it is probably because there is a challenge with an imbalance between electricity consumption and production. Shutting the wind turbine down contributes to creating balance in the electricity system, and is necessary for the security of supply in the regional electricity system.

Answer: Which role does wind turbines play in the climate, environment and public health?

Wind energy is the most mature and efficient of renewable energy technologies. In good locations, new, large wind turbines are today so competitive that green power from onshore wind turbines is today the cheapest method of reducing CO2 from electricity production. When environmental costs and CO2 quota purchases are considered, wind energy is the economically cheapest technology for electricity production.

But climate gains - a result of reduced CO2 emissions - are not the only advantages of wind turbines. The physical environment and public health are also positively affected when wind turbines replace fossil fuels in energy production and transport. In contrast to electricity and heat produced by wind turbines, the fossil fuels used in power plants and in wood-burning stoves emit polluting gases and particles.
